The Tahatika Project

Pohutukawa are a caring, sharing group of people :-)  We loaded our bags with our lunch and headed to Turangawaewae to plant native trees. We were met by Nana Mamae and her dog Blackey, he likes people more than he likes other dogs! Our mission was to plant 2000 native trees along the side of the Waikato River in preparation for the upcoming Waka Ama Regatta.  The sun was hot, the weather warm and smiles from ear to ear surrounded us. We had lots of fun digging holes, planting trees and cleaning up the bank of the river.

Once we were finished planting we were lucky enough to be able to sit and listen to Nana Mamae share the history of Turangawaewae.  Chloe says "It is such amazing history and Nana Mamae is a wonderful story teller, we know how lucky we are to have had that opportunity''

The bus ride home was quiet because we were so exhausted, but we were happy.
